The Montains Witness, The Stones Remeber (2025)

In Iranian mythology, heroes and divine forces often turned to the mountains—or rose from them—in times of oppression and chaos to fight against tyranny and injustice. While daily life in Iran is profoundly shaped by the Islamic regime, which seeks to marginalize women in particular, an extraordinary form of resistance emerges everywhere: the strong presence of unveiled Iranian women. They challenge not only social norms but also the very power structures that seek to control their bodies. The resistance of Iranian women does not manifest in mythical powers or divine armor, but in their unwavering courage, resilience, and relentless pursuit of freedom, equality, and justice.

This series not only explores social realities and the strength of women, but also engages with photography itself as a medium. Analog photography, with its inherent limitations, mirrors the restrictions and obstacles that women and society in Iran face every day. Video and sound recordings captured on mobile phones add another dimension, documenting daily life. In contrast, the series culminates in digital photographs portraying women in the mountains of Iran. Digital photography, with its precision and flexibility, transcends the constraints of the analog medium and symbolizes a breakthrough.

Known as the Girls of Enghelab Street, these women turned the act of climbing onto utility boxes in Tehran and removing their hijabs into a powerful gesture of defiance. In response, the government altered the boxes by installing slanted surfaces to prevent further acts of protest. Today, these electrical boxes remain scattered throughout the streets of Tehran—everyday objects that have become enduring symbols of Iranian women’s resistance. Analog photography, Tehran, 2024.
